Imagine stepping outside for a cheeky late-night vape or taking the bins out – and suddenly the sky decides to put on a full-blown sci-fi show.
That’s exactly what happened last night when a mysterious glowing swirl appeared in the sky, leaving people absolutely baffled, spooked, and reaching for their phones faster than you can say “aliens.”
The strange spiral of light, which looked like something straight out of Interstellar, was spotted in several countries across the Northern Hemisphere, including Norway, Alaska, and parts of Canada. Naturally, the internet did what it does best – panic, speculate, and meme the life out of it.
Videos quickly made their way onto TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), showing a hypnotic white-blue swirl slowly rotating across the night sky. Some viewers compared it to a “galactic drain,” others joked that it was “Elon Musk opening a wormhole.”
So what the hell was it?
Well, despite hopes of first contact or a Marvel-style portal, experts have come forward with a far less extra-terrestrial – but still fascinating – explanation.
Turns out, the glow was most likely caused by a SpaceX rocket releasing excess fuel after a launch. Yep, that’s right. Elon strikes again.
Astrophysicists say that when rockets reach high altitudes, their fuel dumps can reflect sunlight in strange and beautiful ways, especially in the thin atmosphere. Combine that with a bit of spinning motion, and boom – you’ve got yourself a glowing sky spiral that makes half the internet think we’re living in Stranger Things.
This isn’t even the first time it’s happened. Similar spirals have been spotted in the past after SpaceX launches, though they’re still rare enough to freak people out every time.
Still, if you were one of the lucky few who saw it live, fair play – that’s a once-in-a-lifetime sky show. And if you didn’t? Well, you can always pretend you were abducted by aliens. It’s 2025 – go wild.
